69% of Devs Love ChatGPT

JetBrain's DevEcosystem 2024 report is out.

JetBrain's DevEcosystem 2024 report and 23,262 developers responded to the survey.

ChatGPT?

Apparently, 69% of them have tried ChatGPT, and 49% are using it regularly for coding. That’s almost half the dev world saying, “Yeah, AI’s got my back.”

What about GitHub Copilot?

Also pretty popular—40% of devs gave it a shot, and 26% are keeping it in their regular toolbox. These numbers didn’t shock me. These tools have been all over the place, and they’ve made their case as serious productivity boosters.

But here’s what caught me off guard: only 3% of developers are using Anthropic’s Claude, which, if you ask me, is the best model(Sonnet 3.5) for programming right now.

Seriously, this thing is incredible at understanding complex code and producing clean, efficient solutions.

So why aren’t more people using it?

Probably because it comes with annoying limitations like usage caps and availability issues. Fix those, and I bet that number would skyrocket.

Time saved

Now, let’s talk about time saved. On average, developers reported that AI tools save them a decent chunk of time—32% said they save between 1 to less than 2 hours per week. Not bad, right? It’s not life-changing (yet), but it’s enough to make a dent in those never-ending to-do lists.

Then there’s the whole company policy thing.

According to the survey, only 29% of companies allow their devs to use third-party AI tools for all projects. Meanwhile, 11% have outright banned them. That’s a big deal! Some devs probably want to experiment more but get stuck behind corporate red tape.

So, where does this leave us?

AI tools are clearly becoming a staple for developers, but we’re still figuring out how they fit into the bigger picture. Are they just the shiny new thing, or will they fundamentally change the way we code?

My take?

In a few years, these AI tools will either be as common as Stack Overflow—or we’ll all have moved on to whatever the next big thing is. But hey, for now, I’ll stick with Claude (when the caps don’t ruin my vibe).
